Research projects:

  • Ms. Natalia Argentina Montenegro Garcia: "Evaluate the potential of dairy manure and algae for biogas production"

    The main objective of this project is to assess the biogas production potential of different ratios of dairy manure with algal biomass viz. 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50. Total biogas and methane production were measured and the changes in total solids, total volatile solids, COD and volatile fatty acid contents in the feedstock were recorded. Also the total anaerobic bacteria, cellulolytic bacteria, acid forming bacteria and aceticlastic and hydrogen oxidizing methanogens were quantified in the feedstock at different time intervals.


  • Mr. Ulises Cesar Triana Domiguez: “Composting as pretreatment technology for biomass wastes for ethanol fermentation”

    The main objective of this project is to assess composting as pretreatment technology for lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production. A study was conducted using poultry litter and pine chip mixture as biomass feedstock with a C:N ratio of 30:1 and the effect of composting on release of sugars was evaluated with and without temperature control and the addition of Trichoderma reesei as starter culture. Experiment was conducted for 7 weeks to estimate the total and reducing sugar content of the feedstock.
