TIES INTENRNSHIPS GROUP IV:
Alejandra Alvarado Rodríguez, Lizeth Dzul Torres
July 7, 2009- December 15, 2009

Research projects:

  • Alejandra Alvarado Rodríguez:  “Anaerobic dry digestion of livestock wastes with crude glycerol

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the anaerobic dry co-digestion of poultry litter with crude glycerol.  This study will generate information regarding total biogas and methane production from substrate mixtures with a C:N ratio of 25:1 and solid concentrations of 10, 20 and 35%. The effect of addition of sources of inoculum such as municipal sludge and rumen fluid will be also evaluated.

  • Lizeth Dzul Torres: “Anaerobic co-digestion of animal manure and algae biomass with crude glycerol

The main objective of this study is to evaluate anaerobic co-digestion of poultry litter and algae biomass with crude glycerol.  Poultry litter and glycerol mixture with a C:N ratio of 20:1 and  solid concentration of 6% will be assessed for its biomethane production potential in comparison with dairy manure (6% solids) as feedstock in 100 L capacity semi-continuously fed reactors. Also a mixture of algal biomass and glycerol with different C:N ratios viz. 10:1, 20:1, 30:1 and 40:1 with a solid concentration of 6% will be evaluated for their biomethane generation potential in batch reactors of 2 L capacity with 800 mL working volume.
